Healthcare Recovery for the Gulf Coast

A recent article in the USA Today stated that there was a 47% rise in deaths in the Gulf Coast states within the impact area of Hurricane Katrina as a result of the loss of healthcare professionals in those areas. Healthcare professionals displaced by Hurricane Katrina, many laboring under the burden of student loan repayments and the daily financial needs of life assimilated themselves into their new home community as they landed in cities and towns across the United States.

Now that the cities of the Gulf Coast are rebuilding they are discovering that these healthcare professionals are not rushing home to the Gulf Coast.

Startup cost for a private medical practice vary between $100,000 and $200,000 for rent, business insurance, malpractice insurance, equipment, supplies, information systems, computers and simple office decorations. Most of the healthcare providers in the Gulf Coast region lost well-established practices and if they were insured at all they used the funds from those insurance payments to begin again in their new communities. Unfortunately, healthcare practices in 2007 have little resale value; particularly, when only one or two years old. Even if these professionals were inclined to move back to the Gulf Coast region, they face significant financial hardship in accomplishing that feat.

Add to this the lack of meaningful business recovery and a decline in the number of insured patients in many of these regions. The sad facts are that employment statistics and new business starts in the areas most affected by Hurricane Katrina are well below national averages. Healthcare providers, now comfortable in their new homes, find little inducement to assume the responsibilities, liabilities and hardships of returning to their former practices and even when they do often find that their former patients have yet to return as well.

Physicians are not the only individuals affected in this fashion. Hospitals that have already reopened in the Gulf Coast region are finding it more difficult to recruit nurses in a nation where there are already nursing shortages. Even when temporary staffing agencies provide nurses, known as travelers in the industry, to the Gulf Coast region to fulfill short-term contracts, most of these nurses decline the opportunity to extend their stay, take full-time positions, or return at a future date.

Much of the problem is that as healthcare has moved from the individual private doctor and the small community hospital to large corporate enterprise, it severed its relationships with its healthcare professionals seeing them more as expendable drones and less as a necessary and valued part of the healthcare delivery system.

Healthcare professionals regularly find themselves mandated to choose between maximizing patient flow and maximizing patient safety. They are often forced to forego important family events under threat of suspension, retaliation or termination. When the healthcare professional finds a home where they can achieve a level of work/life balance, it is difficult if not impossible to dislodge them again. It took a hurricane to dislodge these professionals from the Gulf Coast and nothing short of another force of nature, perhaps this one favorable, will move them back.

How Does Health Insurance Work?

There are lots of different kinds of health insurance. Plan that cover medical services and prescription medicines, plans that cover dental expenses, disability insurance that replaces income lost due to extended illness or injury, long-term care, and so on. In the United States, people typically refer to the plans that cover medical expenses as "health insurance", and these plans are usually bought by employers and offered to employees as part of their compensation, or "benefits".

Health insurance plans are usually sold once, then renewed on an annual basis. So when a consumer buys health insurance (either directly or through an employer), the insurer agrees to pay for health expenses as long as the premiums are paid on time and the account is in good standing.

Health insurance plans come in two flavors: "Fee-for-Service" or "Managed Care". Both types of insurance cover major medical, surgical and hospital expenses, and are often referred to as "major medical plans". Fee-for-service plans pay the medical service provider a fee for each service provided to a patient, and that patient can usually go see whatever health care provider they wish. Managed care plans, on the other hand, pre-pay contracted providers for each member's coverage in advance. Members are offered a financial incentive to use providers who belong to the plan.

Here are a few common terms that you'll probably run into:

Deductible: This is the amount you must pay out-of-pocket before the insurer will pay anything. Deductibles can vary widely, ranging from $0 to a few thousand dollars.

Co-insurance amount: This is the percentage of your medical expenses you must pay after you reach your deductible. This will typically range from 10-30%.

Maximum out-of-pocket amount: This is maximum amount you are required to pay in a given year, after which the insurer will pay 100% of the cost of covered medical expenses.

Covered benefits: Types of medical services the insurer will pay for.

Exclusions: Types of medical services the insurer will not pay for.

Nursing Shortage Causes Concern About The Future Of Healthcare

America is in the midst of a nursing shortage that is expected to get worse as baby boomers age and the need for health care increases. Complicating the nursing shortage problem is the fact that nursing schools and universities across the country are having difficulty maintaining enrollment levels that still are not sufficient to meet the projected demand for nursing care.

The 6940 would get a 2 star rating from me, and is clearly not on the same level as the 7340. If you're on a budget I'd still pass on the 6940. The extra few dollars is well worth the upgrade to the 7340. My face was really soar with the 6940, but not with the 7340. The upgraded heads on the 7340 made a huge difference. Another bummer with the 6940 is the short cord... even though the 7340 is cordless, the charging cord is longer on the 7340 and a bit too short for the fixed corded 6940.

Both sound much more quite then my older Norelcos I had. The quite sound makes it seem like they are slow, but don't let that fool you the 7340 works great. I also recommend spending the couple of extra dollars over the other 7310XL and get the better heads. I believe that is the only difference besides color between those two.

Overall I think the 7340 has worked out great, and is the best overall value Norelco Shaver. I've had it for over a month and it still has only been charged once. I've used it nearly every day and have thick and quick growing hair.

I've been a safety razor user for years - and a frustrated one at that. This is a process way too complicated and messy for me at this stage in life. I was looking for something simple to use and found it in the Norelco 7340 men's electric razor. It's quiet and easy to use. The rotating heads give me a close enough shave that lasts a day or two. It's super easy to clean with warm water by just opening the head. I wipe the shaver body dry, shake it out with the head closed, re-open the head and air dry it. The one downside is the lack of a light that signals the need to re-charge the shaver. I called customer service about this and was told that when the motor slows down, it's time for re-charging. I can live with this. I was also told that the internal batteries last about 3-5 years. The customer service rep told me to buy a new razor rather than send it back for a new battery to be installed. The reason: the higher cost of replacing the battery. I've been using it for about 3 weeks and recommend it. For me, it's a good buy for the price.

I just want a razor that worked, this seems to fit the bill okay -- does a decent job. I had a braun, and it started tugging the crap out of my hair, even with a new blade replacement. This razor doesn't tug or get caught, but you have to go very slowly around and over multiple times to get all the hair.

After having been very happy with the Moroccan Oil, I tried the shampoo, conditioner and curl creme and I have to say I am 100% dissatisfied. The shampoo strips the oil from you hair, dries it out, and the conditioner is not nearly rich enough to return it. The curl creme? Good grief..save your money. I have naturally curly hair, and all it did was make my hair dry (on top of the very drying shampoo and conditioner) and certainly did nothing to enhance curls or reduce frizz. With the exception of the oil itself, these other items in the line are no good.

So for starters, the item is good and definitely a good choice. I always notice and see huge gains whenever I use it!

I wanted to warn any potential buyerss to AVOID seller DIRECT SUPER CENTER (DAB NUTRITION).

I recently purchased from them since they offered a good price. However, 10 days later when I had to contact them about the status of my order, they informed me that they did not actually have the product because it was on backorder with the manufacturer. So if it wasn't bad enough that they sold me a product that they did not own, nor were able to deliver, I called BSN to see if ANY had been on backorder this month. They told me that no flavors had been on backorder for several months.

Of course, this does have a 4g creatine blend.
But, there are no calories or protein.
So you would have to get your carbs/protein from some other supplement.
If you tried NO-explode, you would know that when you mix your drink with water, you get a more homogenous mixture.
But with Cellmass, you get ALOT of sediments in the bottom. (I mixed it and drank it RIGHT after, so it didnt just settle to the bottom).

Overall, Id recommend something else.

Texas health insurance options are pretty good if you need to get individual or family health insurance because you are self-employed or it's not available any other way. There are different types of plans, and costs and coverages can vary quite a bit. Here's how you can find health insurance coverage.

Like in most states, you can get health insurance in Texas that basically falls into two categories: Fee-for-service and managed care.

Such studies are a proof that US government should help finance the private sector to provide health insurance coverage to the many uninsured workers.

The Medicare Supplement Plans or the Medigap policies are supplementary health insurance policies that are sold by the private insurance companies. These policies are not completely independent but actually they are invented as a supplement to the original Medicare insurance. These are closely related with the Original Medicare. The purpose of the Medicare Supplement Plans is to fill up the gap between the policy coverage of the Original Medicare plans and the actual medical bill payable.

That is a reason why these policies are also known as the Medigap plans. However, though these plans are totally administered and sold by the private insurance companies still there are only 12 standard plans under the letter heads A through L that they are permitted to sell.
