The Concept of Having a Universal Healthcare System

For most societies health, birth and death is something that falls into the society's responsibility and people prefer to pay taxes to have this administrated. USA is the only civilized country that doesn't have universal health care.

The ideas and thought behind a universal healthcare:

For most people to have a system dealing with life and death in the hands of incorporated businesses, seems grotesque and scary. The grotesque part is that people are getting profit from matters of life and death. The scary part is that a greedy organization might kill people for profit, by not paying for treatments. Another scary part is that when you might need healthcare the most, as when you can't work because of ill health, that's when you don't have a health insurance. Besides it's not only about yourself and your family it's about the health of the society. There are more to life then yourself, and when other people suffer, so will you. Shouldn't citizen's health be more important than the concept that some people should earn money by squeezing sick people out of treatment options?

Somehow the Americans have lived with this system and according to the polls, at least 40% of the population do not find it disturbing at all, but want to continue having a privatized health system. I'm not sure why, however when listening to the politicians their argument is that without a privatized system you can't choose your own plan or your preferred hospital and doctor; meaning the quality of the treatment is better.

Are the treatment and the quality in a privatized health care better?

I believe this is difficult to answer because it depends on the people creating the healthcare system and what they find important. The first measurement should be if there is a healthcare system for everybody, and it seems that the privatized system fails at its foundations. I have lived under both systems and I have noticed that under a universal healthcare system that nurses and doctors might become lazy and maybe arrogant toward the patients. However I don't think this is an issue connected to the universal health system, but the regulation of accepted behavior and the right to complain.

Another issue is the lines for certain treatments. However, I don't believe is connected to the universal health system either, it's more an issue connected to small countries with few surgeons and experience in certain health issues. For small countries this is something that might and are solved - by sending patients abroad to neighbor countries.

In countries that have based their healthcare on a universal health care system, there are options for a private clinic for those who want to pay for themselves and don't want to wait in line or for the appointment. It's not either universal healthcare or private healthcare, it's both.

Who Does the Healthcare Reform Bill Really Help?

Since the beginning of the healthcare debate, many things have been said about how healthcare reform will help all of us. Lower premiums, a ban on pre-existing conditions and affordable care for those who don't have insurance are just a few. Many of the provisions don't kick in until 2014, but the extra taxes have already started. Our elected officials have decided in their infinite wisdom that 10 years of income collection vs. 6 years of benefits somehow makes this bill budget neutral, but they didn't even get that right. We all know that the new healthcare law will cost far more than they have told us, but who is really benefiting from our additional expense?

People with pre-existing conditions can no longer be denied for health insurance, but they will be placed in high risk pools with subsidized and high premiums. This is a good thing for those that couldn't get health insurance previously because of a health condition, but everyone else will have to make up the difference in cost. Regardless of how you feel about income redistribution, this provision is good for about 15% of the population at the expense of the other 85%. They say the costs will be partially offset by government subsidies, but the government's money comes from the same people in taxes; so one way or another everyone will be paying more. Still, most people agree that something needed to be done to help these people and this seemed like the only real choice.

Children up to the age of 26 can now remain on their parents health insurance as long as they are in college or still living at home. By the age of 26, Alexander the Great had already conquered all of Persia and assumed control of one of the largest empires in history. I don't believe a person in their twenties can be considered a child, and there are many other options for young adults in college. Parents still have to pay more to have their children on their policies, so this is more about additional income for the insurance companies from a portion of the population that hardly ever needs to use it. This will help keep everyone else's premiums down, but again, we are back to the income redistribution issue that most people don't want.

About 16% of the American population falls below the poverty line and these people don't typically have health insurance. There is a mandate that starts in 2014 that will force people to purchase health insurance if they don't have it, and Americans below the poverty line will be exempt. Congress believes that the additional customers will bring premiums down to a level that will make it affordable for those below the poverty line, but most believe that this mandate is unconstitutional and will be thrown out; so where does that leave us? A healthcare exchange will be formed in 2014 that will put people into pools and make it cheaper to purchase a policy; but again for most people below the poverty line, premiums will still be too expensive to get. The idea is to make it possible for 16% to get insurance and mandatory for the other 84%, but what does that say about the America we live in today?

The new healthcare law does help some people without a doubt, but it hurts almost everyone except the politicians. This is yet another great example of the government trying to "help" us by telling us how to live our lives. In 2014, the rest of our "help" will kick in and really corrode the level of our healthcare system. It won't be budget neutral for the first 10 years, and it will skyrocket in cost the 10 years after that. All this when companies like Ameriplan and others already had good alternatives to solve the problem. All or part of the healthcare law may be repealed at some point, but we still need to address the needs of those that fall through the cracks.

Illinois Healthcare And The Government

According to the Governor of Illinois the state is leading the way in figuring out healthcare issues for thousands of children, senior citizens and working parents in the state and providing access to quality affordable healthcare. Whether they can utilize hospitals in the Chicago area or elsewhere throughout the state, it is a top priority in both the state of Illinois and the nation. The presidential candidates are all touting they have the answer to what this nation needs while Illinois stays ahead of the curve and in many areas is actually leading the way.

One of the ways this was carried out included expanding the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program to provide to all uninsured women in Illinois, regardless of income, access to the screenings that could save their lives. These steps have led to the national increase in survivorship of all cancers due to early detection and treatment of breast cancer and other cancers. Illinois believes in healthcare for all men, women and children, regardless of income, as a right not a privilege.

In that light, Illinois developed a program for those brave men and women who serve the nation by defending it overseas. This program provides access to programs and treatments to keep them healthy when they return to the great state of Illinois. The program is called the Warriors Assistance Program and is the first of its kind in the nation. Some of the services provided include a twenty-four hour toll free phone line which is staffed by health professions to assist veterans with symptoms related to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This service also provides pre-emptive screenings for Traumatic Stress Disorder for all returning National Guard members. This is another example of being first in the nation for helping those in need of help without the means to get it otherwise.

Illinois is truly a leader when it comes to setting the standards for programs for those not fortunate enough to be covered for healthcare and get the services they may need to lead a healthy and happy life. We are, after all, the right to pursue happiness in this country. Part of that would have to be maintaining health and knowing that your children have access to healthcare. Illinois is way ahead in leading the nation with providing access to healthcare yet they feel they still have a long way to go.




It doesn't matter where a person lives in Illinois and whether they can use hospitals in the Chicago area or any of the many hospitals in Illinois. More and more people have access to healthcare. As a true leader, Illinois healthcare is providing a variety of services to many who wouldn't qualify in other states.

We Can No Longer Afford Healthcare That Promotes Disease

The primary problem is promoting and then maintaining disease is so profitable! Yet although a few do profit, millions in the nation are paying the price. Not just higher taxes and insurance rates, but also with their health. Worst of all, possibly even their life - and just so select few can afford to live the high life.

We need to even the playing field. We can start by becoming better informed. I believe I can speak from experience. I was born way back in 1933 (the end of the depression), and have researched health issues for over 48 years. For example, as a child we lived in the country, and had no phone, electricity, or running water. We raised most of our own food organically. I always got plenty of exercise, feeding the animals, and tending the garden. From age 12 through 15, also worked in the woods all summer logging, with my older brother, Clive, and my father - no power chain saws.

I have seen amazing changes over the years, as most of the "elderly" likely have. Although I have been around for many years, and will actually be 80 in only 3 years, I actually don't think or feel that old. I have learned many ways to slow down, and even reverse aging over the years, which appears to be working. Secrets that I will be sharing with you in the future, so stay tuned. I say secrets as, some are actually my discovers, and others I have learned from some of the brightest scientists in the entire world. Some were actually discovered hundreds, and even thousands of years ago, yet deliberately suppressed. If they can't be patented, and sold at a huge profit, they won't be promoted, it's that simple.

Surprisingly, I feel little different at 77 than I did at 27. In fact, my memory is even better than it was over 59 years ago while attending the University of Oregon.

The pharmaceutical giants are past masters at marketing. After all when you can create drugs (chemicals created in some lab), that are super cheap to produce, then mark them up tens of thousands of percent, marketing takes on a high priority. They're also fully aware that if a drug is super expensive the patients would assume it must be good! The greatest amount of deception in that regard lies in the cancer industry. Chemo drugs "the most toxic in the world", are not only ineffective, but even capable of totally destroying a patient's overall health, yet by far the most expensive. If drugs were priced based on results, cancer drugs should be the cheapest of all.

When it comes to chemo drugs, companies have become increasingly greedy. For example, one company decided their drug should be worth $30,000 per month. Then not to be outdone by their competitor, another company decided their version should be worth $90,000 per month. Their use is recommended when all else fails, and the patient is becoming desperate. Their logic appears to be, they are likely to die anyway, so if they have any money left, we might as well be the beneficiaries. Then one more company considered relying on the paradigm that traditional medicine does. Don't attempt to cure, but instead manage a disease, with drugs, for a lifetime. Basically create millions of annuities (lifetime incomes). Thus, they announced a drug costing $2,400. per month to "manage cancer", which incidentally could easily be accomplished easily with nutrition. The only difference is, for one-tenth that amount, (or less), the chances are that you will actually cure the cancer in the process, as well as improvising your overall health.

Then when it comes to diabetes, we are told that it can't be cured, but instead managed for a lifetime, (with drugs or insulin of course). Then we have the meters, test strips, and even expensive insulin pumps that drives up the cost. Jane Addams and Chicago South Suburbs Healthcare

Jane Addams was born in 1860 in a Chicago south suburbs hospital of an upper-class family. She studied at Rockford College, and was one of the first women in America to graduate from a college. Because she was frustrated by the dearth of opportunities which were available to ambitious and intelligent young ladies, she journeyed to Europe with a friend she knew in college, Ellen Gates Starr. In 1887, as their trip was ending, they paid a visit to Toynbee Hall, which was located in the Whitechapel district of London (the place where Jack the Ripper committed his crimes one year later). Toynbee Hall was the very first settlement house: a house located in an impoverished neighborhood in which people who had been educated in college could settle and work together to help improve the lives of the poor. Jane Addams and Ellen Starr were impressed by what they saw and they determined to start a settlement house when they returned to Chicago. They rented a house on Halsted St. in Chicago's poorest, toughest neighborhood which had formerly been owned by Charles Hull, and called it Hull House.

Hull House was opened in 1889. Its earliest offerings included classes about Shakespeare, discussions about fine art, and classical music concerts. Jane Addams and Ellen Starr and their associates found collaborators among their elite friends in Chicago south suburbs healthcare. The University of Chicago began to offer extension school coursework at Hull House (the first time this had been done outside of the University). A trustee from the Chicago Art Institute donated an art gallery which put on regular shows which frequently brought hundreds of visitors. The Chicago Public Library opened a branch at Hull House. Jane Addams was not so naïve as to believe that her work was merely altruistic. She saw that Hull House was as much for the benefit of the upper-class volunteers who manned it - giving socially-conscious upper-class women a way to channel their energy - as it was for the poor. As the project grew her approach changed: she began to try to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood and south Chicago Illinois hospital. Because the putrid garbage in the streets and alleys bred rats where the local children played, she had a garbage incinerator installed at Hull House. When the city government ignored her complaints about the garbage conditions in the neighborhood, she attempted to obtain a job as a garbage collector. In 1895 the city did appoint her inspector of garbage, which job entailed making sure that garbage bins were emptied and that trash was burned. Eventually Hull House included a museum of labor, a day care center, and a theater. It also offered classes on electricity, sewing and mending, and mathematics as well as the original arts curriculum.

Jane Addams became a well-known advocate for the poor and disadvantaged and a leader of the progressive movement. She was a spokesperson for the National Federation of Settlements, the National American Women Suffrage Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the American Civil Liberties Union. A pacifist and internationalist at a time when most Americans were isolationists, she was a founder of the International League for Peace and Freedom after World War I and was its president for ten years. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931; she died four years later. The Hull House is presently part of the University of Chicago and is a museum of Jane Addams work and life.

Even when temporary staffing agencies provide nurses, known as travelers in the industry, to the Gulf Coast region to fulfill short-term contracts, most of these nurses decline the opportunity to extend their stay, take full-time positions, or return at a future date.

Much of the problem is that as healthcare has moved from the individual private doctor and the small community hospital to large corporate enterprise, it severed its relationships with its healthcare professionals seeing them more as expendable drones and less as a necessary and valued part of the healthcare delivery system.

Healthcare professionals regularly find themselves mandated to choose between maximizing patient flow and maximizing patient safety. They are often forced to forego important family events under threat of suspension, retaliation or termination. When the healthcare professional finds a home where they can achieve a level of work/life balance, it is difficult if not impossible to dislodge them again. It took a hurricane to dislodge these professionals from the Gulf Coast and nothing short of another force of nature, perhaps this one favorable, will move them back.
