PSP 3000 (2009-02-24)
Not sure why they call it a pack--you can't do anything with it until you buy something to use with it. Anyway, my son loves playing with this psp...that is after you buy a game and a memory stick.

fun redefined (2009-02-22)
this was bought as a gift for my brother to replace his psp (1st generation). According to his evaluation, he seems to have more fun since its faster & brighter. SDidn't go wrong with this as a xmas gift.

PSP Rocks! (2009-02-20)
I don't know why I waited so long to get one. God of War is awesome!

A great system with a few drawbacks. (2009-02-16)
The PSP-3000 has taken the place of a Nintendo DS (pre-Lite) as my handheld of choice.

To start, this unit is gorgeous. The screen is enormous and vivid. The screen is bright enough for outdoor use, so long as the sun isn't shining directly onto it. I love the black finish, and it's not as much of a fingerprint magnet as I though it would be. I have a blackberry curve that gets my fingers a little sweaty after prolonged use, but the PSP does not. Certainly a plus.

The D-pad on this unit is FANTASTIC. Anyone who owns an Xbox 360 understands that a D-pad can be very frustrating if done wrong. Not the case here, as it handles like a dream. The buttons are large and feel great as well. As for the analog "nub", I haven't quite come around to it yet. I haven't played any games that fully rely on it, but in using it sparingly in some games, and on the web browser, I can say that it just doesn't feel that great to me. Your milage may vary.

I have noticed NONE of the ballywhoed (is that how you spell it?) interlacing problems that I've seen mentioned. The screen is perfect during gameplay, and the screen is perfect during movie playback. Period.

Also of note, the PSP does have a good games library, contrary to the opinons of some. (I'd recommend Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2, and the wonderful Patapon for starters) Other than gameplay, I'd say that where the PSP excels is as a music/podcast player. The XMB works well, just like the PS3's. I have about a dozen albums on my PSP, (on a memory stick of course) and also get my daily dose of Pardon the Interruption via my PSP. I download the PTI podcast direct from the PSP's web browser, negating the need to hook it up to a computer. I LOVE this feature. Speaking of which, I'd say that the web browser is about what you'd expect. Not bad, not great. Par for the course in mobile devices.

I gave the PSP-3000 4 stars instead of 5 for the following reasons:

-The PSP is very picky as a video player. Do some searches on the web about the PSP's required video codecs and you'll seee that it's a huge hassle getting video on this thing. I was quite disappointed by this.
-Speaker volume. I listen to my podcasts with the volume turned all the way up, but I still wish it would go higher. I've seen this mentioned by others as well.
-Disc noise. With some titles, you'll hear an alarming scratching noise during loading times. I practically ran to a computer to see if others had this problem when I first heard it, but it seems that this is nothing out of the ordinary. Hear it for the first time and you'll see why I was so worried. It sounds AWFUL. I do admit that I have gotten used to it though. (Also, Patapon does NOT exhibit this problem during loading. Disc noise seemingly varies from game to game.)
-Memory. How the hell does this system still not have internal memory? Anything you'll ever want to do (play games, store media) will require a memory stick. Memory sticks are of course more expensive than similiar media, because it's Sony's proprietary format. Ugh. Having said that, you can get a good price on 4gb sticks now. But it still hurts to have to shell out more money after springing for the already pricy PSP.

Shortcomings aside, I still recommend the PSP-3000 for anyone looking for a capable game machine. For those like myself that don't carry an iPod or similiar media device, the PSP comes with a higher recommendation since it aptly serves to replace the iPod's media features. All around a great handheld.
